# re: Certification exams

Microsoft Learning don't allow 'spelling mistake' questions. The questions are more along the lines of "Is this the right property to manipulate". If it mentions a property, you can assume it exists. Furthermore, in any multiple-choice question, the correct answer(s) should be 100% correct, and the wrong answers should be 100% wrong. They also shouldn't be designed to 'trick' you - the idea is to differentiate qualified candidates from unqualified candidates. If that's not the case, then put a comment on it saying as much.

But the best sign of progress from MSL is actually that they are making simulation and emulation questions for as many exams as possible. Problem is (as far as I can tell), these questions take much longer to create than multiple choice ones. But (also as far as I can tell) the effort is worth it, because it's much harder for dodgy people to cheat (or study for them without actually learning the material). And it typically results in exams that are much better at that differentiation thing.

71-540 wasn't my favourite exam (I sat it this morning). I won't say more than that because of the NDA agreement. Beta exams are largely about the comments though, so it's definitely worthwhile spending as much time as you can working out what to comment on any question you feel is comment-worthy. I wrote quite a lot on this one. As for whether I passed or not - I have no idea.

# re: Certification exams

Incidentally, as someone who has a uni degree and is a fan of the ACS, I recommend you do what you can to help Microsoft Learning improve. If they somehow get it right, then that should really make the certifications worth having, and we'll have some sort of measure of a developer.

Let's face it - it's very hard to try to work out whether a developer meets a particular standard. If you have ideas, then do let me know.

# re: VB.NET Event Handlers

*from memory, from VS.NET 2002/.NET v1.0*

this is very ugly when passing such members (ones declared with WithEvents) ByRef to methods. Very ugly under the covers and performed poorly too. What made it worst of course was that upgraded code had these passed around everywhere byref (not many people changed the default in vb6). Quick solution was of course to pass the _X rather than just X (this was preferable to analysing every method to see if changing from byref to byval would break things)

just a £0.01 :)

# re: [OT] Whinging Australian farmers

Nick

Farmer's son here. I agree with you.

1. those who whinge the loudest get heard and served first

2. farmers have bit political and moral clout in Canberra (who want's to bash the bush? How non Australian is that?)

3. Australia lives in the 1950s and believes that the country still rides on the sheep's back. Yesm the county relies on primary production: digging up the rare dirt and selling to to China

4. In the 19th century, farmers in SA located themselves in a 'wet period' in what is now a 'dry' part of the state. What's to say that farmers are still attempting to grow crops on the margins, now?  200 years is not long in geologic time.

# re: Scoble hits the nail on the head w.r.t. Zune

I agree - I use my PDA as a phone, RSS/podcast reader and MP3 player. I need to replace my 1GB card with a 2GB card soon, but really there isn't a lot more that I wish it had.

Ok, I think there's a place for having a proper camera as well as a PDA.
And I wish that my PDA would play through a bluetooth headset (rather than bluetooth headphones, which are different).
And an FM transmitter would be good, so that I could tune my car stereo in to it.

But on the whole, I want all this stuff in a single device, not a bunch of different ones. I'm never going to buy a separate MP3 player.

# re: Scoble hits the nail on the head w.r.t. Zune

You have to wait for updates (both firmaware and maybe hardware) for the Zune Wifi to do what you really expect it to do. For the moment I believe that downloading a podcast on your hard disk and auto syncing it with the Zune should be enough.

Rob: Zune is really a music but also a video player. I don't think you can keep your music videos in a 2 GB memory card. Although I respect that it is annoying to keep in your pocket a phone and a music player... There are different points of you here.

Thanks for the story, Nick.

Zune's an easier sell for me. I've owned two iPods, but I don't have a huge investment in iTunes at this point.

What draws me then to Zune? Sweet 3" screen. Built-in FM. Decent, if not overwhelming, capacity with 30GB. And a music subscription model that makes sense for me. I'm not sacrificing much by going Zune versus spending the same amount of money for a 30GB iPod.

And the built-in wireless will become more useful as Microsoft rolls out upgrades. We've seen that happen with Xbox 360 and I expect that model to continue with Zune.

# re: Why did Microsoft break Outlook 2007?

Nick, I had a similar problem on my Tablet PC when running Beta 1. The fault was closed, and no one could find anything.

Since then I installed RTM and worked out what was wrong on my configuration.

Make sure the HTTP/S Proxy you use has the same name as the server and both use the same SSL certificate. In my case, even though the RPC and the Proxy server were the same, the certificate was in the name of the RPC server name, and the Proxy was the most common name for my machine.

Once I have both the same, and added the proper registry settings I got this working. It now connects almost instantly, from my LAN or from outside via Wi-Fi or HSDPA.

# re: While C# has the "because" operator, VB.NET has the "why" query operator

Nick, is it also true that the WhyOhWhyException will make an appearance in the next revision of hte .NET Framework so that we can correctly handle exceptions arising from these silly operators? :-)
Monday, November 27, 2006 4:37 PM by nick

# re: While C# has the "because" operator, VB.NET has the "why" query operator

Yes.  From what I understand they were originally going to implement the JustBecause operator overload as an exception which would be raised if you try to question something that wasn't based on a set of truths.  I like the WhyOhWhyException because unlike a number of the other framework exceptions where you get a FXCop warning saying that you shouldn't use them, this exception was designed so that developers could use it.
