# re: Certification exams

Microsoft Learning don't allow 'spelling mistake' questions. The questions are more along the lines of "Is this the right property to manipulate". If it mentions a property, you can assume it exists. Furthermore, in any multiple-choice question, the correct answer(s) should be 100% correct, and the wrong answers should be 100% wrong. They also shouldn't be designed to 'trick' you - the idea is to differentiate qualified candidates from unqualified candidates. If that's not the case, then put a comment on it saying as much.

But the best sign of progress from MSL is actually that they are making simulation and emulation questions for as many exams as possible. Problem is (as far as I can tell), these questions take much longer to create than multiple choice ones. But (also as far as I can tell) the effort is worth it, because it's much harder for dodgy people to cheat (or study for them without actually learning the material). And it typically results in exams that are much better at that differentiation thing.

71-540 wasn't my favourite exam (I sat it this morning). I won't say more than that because of the NDA agreement. Beta exams are largely about the comments though, so it's definitely worthwhile spending as much time as you can working out what to comment on any question you feel is comment-worthy. I wrote quite a lot on this one. As for whether I passed or not - I have no idea.

# re: Certification exams

Incidentally, as someone who has a uni degree and is a fan of the ACS, I recommend you do what you can to help Microsoft Learning improve. If they somehow get it right, then that should really make the certifications worth having, and we'll have some sort of measure of a developer.

Let's face it - it's very hard to try to work out whether a developer meets a particular standard. If you have ideas, then do let me know.

# re: VB.NET Event Handlers

*from memory, from VS.NET 2002/.NET v1.0*

this is very ugly when passing such members (ones declared with WithEvents) ByRef to methods. Very ugly under the covers and performed poorly too. What made it worst of course was that upgraded code had these passed around everywhere byref (not many people changed the default in vb6). Quick solution was of course to pass the _X rather than just X (this was preferable to analysing every method to see if changing from byref to byval would break things)

just a £0.01 :)

# re: [OT] Whinging Australian farmers

Nick

Farmer's son here. I agree with you.

1. those who whinge the loudest get heard and served first

2. farmers have bit political and moral clout in Canberra (who want's to bash the bush? How non Australian is that?)

3. Australia lives in the 1950s and believes that the country still rides on the sheep's back. Yesm the county relies on primary production: digging up the rare dirt and selling to to China

4. In the 19th century, farmers in SA located themselves in a 'wet period' in what is now a 'dry' part of the state. What's to say that farmers are still attempting to grow crops on the margins, now?  200 years is not long in geologic time.

# re: Scoble hits the nail on the head w.r.t. Zune

I agree - I use my PDA as a phone, RSS/podcast reader and MP3 player. I need to replace my 1GB card with a 2GB card soon, but really there isn't a lot more that I wish it had.

Ok, I think there's a place for having a proper camera as well as a PDA.
And I wish that my PDA would play through a bluetooth headset (rather than bluetooth headphones, which are different).
And an FM transmitter would be good, so that I could tune my car stereo in to it.

But on the whole, I want all this stuff in a single device, not a bunch of different ones. I'm never going to buy a separate MP3 player.

# re: Scoble hits the nail on the head w.r.t. Zune

You have to wait for updates (both firmaware and maybe hardware) for the Zune Wifi to do what you really expect it to do. For the moment I believe that downloading a podcast on your hard disk and auto syncing it with the Zune should be enough.

Rob: Zune is really a music but also a video player. I don't think you can keep your music videos in a 2 GB memory card. Although I respect that it is annoying to keep in your pocket a phone and a music player... There are different points of you here.

Thanks for the story, Nick.

Zune's an easier sell for me. I've owned two iPods, but I don't have a huge investment in iTunes at this point.

What draws me then to Zune? Sweet 3" screen. Built-in FM. Decent, if not overwhelming, capacity with 30GB. And a music subscription model that makes sense for me. I'm not sacrificing much by going Zune versus spending the same amount of money for a 30GB iPod.

And the built-in wireless will become more useful as Microsoft rolls out upgrades. We've seen that happen with Xbox 360 and I expect that model to continue with Zune.

# re: Why did Microsoft break Outlook 2007?

Nick, I had a similar problem on my Tablet PC when running Beta 1. The fault was closed, and no one could find anything.

Since then I installed RTM and worked out what was wrong on my configuration.

Make sure the HTTP/S Proxy you use has the same name as the server and both use the same SSL certificate. In my case, even though the RPC and the Proxy server were the same, the certificate was in the name of the RPC server name, and the Proxy was the most common name for my machine.

Once I have both the same, and added the proper registry settings I got this working. It now connects almost instantly, from my LAN or from outside via Wi-Fi or HSDPA.

# re: While C# has the "because" operator, VB.NET has the "why" query operator

Nick, is it also true that the WhyOhWhyException will make an appearance in the next revision of hte .NET Framework so that we can correctly handle exceptions arising from these silly operators? :-)
Monday, November 27, 2006 4:37 PM by nick

# re: While C# has the "because" operator, VB.NET has the "why" query operator

Yes.  From what I understand they were originally going to implement the JustBecause operator overload as an exception which would be raised if you try to question something that wasn't based on a set of truths.  I like the WhyOhWhyException because unlike a number of the other framework exceptions where you get a FXCop warning saying that you shouldn't use them, this exception was designed so that developers could use it.

Forget about using Sandcastle from the command-line. Go get the Sandcastle Help File Builder from codeplex.com

This is similar to the NDoc GUI and works just as well. I've gone one step further and created a MSBuild Task so that I can use the SHFB in my automated builds.

# re: Signing off Version 1

When I was looking after the build process I wrote a nant task that essentially checked out the version file (VSS - the version file was shared across all of the projects so only one file needed to be changed) located the version number then incremented either the build or revision number (depending if a new build or revision is being done) then checks the file back in. It would do this as the final step AFTER the build is built so that any changes to code from that point on are being made to the new version. Worked quite well...

The whole build process has evolved (?) since then and is primarily done via cruise control. A step backwards perhaps but the Nant scripts now modify each file (TFS) from a variable in the script. (Manually modified in the script as required) I prefered the Nant task but I don't look after that process now and the build process has been a moving target.

Creating your own logging infrastructure isn't such a pain if you use the TraceListener class from the Smart Device Framework as a base class. It works in pretty much the same way as the .NET Framework. It's even easier if you use the TextWriterTraceListener.

# re: The Skype Challenge

Great Idea Nick,

My wife and I use a combination of Yahoo Voice, Skype and MyTel VOIP.

We have a Billion VOIP capable ADSL modem, this is great as you can plug two regular telephones into it and make VOIP and if needed regular PSTN calls.

For Australian STD calls we use MyTel, as their calls throughout Australia are only 10c unlimited anytime. Then we use either Skype or Yahoo Voice for International calls depending on which country we are calling. My wife is Vietnamese and find Yahoo Voice is the cheapest at about 10c a minute, which is quite expensive if you compare this to calling other countries, but cheap when you compare it with other VIOP providers with most of them being around 65c per minute.

In short, if you have option infer off and option strict off, your your values will automatically be turned into object types. VB will then try to duck type your properties and may cause unexpected results. If you keep option strict on (as you should), option infer will work more as expected.

# re: Another Entity Framework Beta

I'd like to address some of the issues you bring up...

First, we definitely have folks working successfully with SQL Server Compact Edition.  Can you give more details about the problems you are encountering?

Secondly, it's important to realize that the edmx (designer) file is really just used at design time.  The runtime still uses three separate files (one describing the database schema, one describing the conceptual model and one giving hte mapping between the two).  Those files can be compiled into an assembly as resources or can be delivered individually, so that there can be significant separation between your classes which are built around the conceptual model and the metadata that describes your database (which does, as you say, change at a different rate).

No, inserting the disc in the drive wasn't enough.  I had to take ownership of the mapisvc.inf file in order to get the update to install, too.  Now that the install has been successful, should I give ownership back to SYSTEM?

# re: New Technologies != Better Architecture

Alex, funny that you mentioned web forms.  There is actually a huge destinction between building a rich client application (using winforms or wpf) v's a web application (using web forms, flash, silverlight etc).  This IS an architecture decision and whilst I made the point that the choice of technology is an implementation detail, sometimes an earlier decision (ie an architectural decision) will preclude certain techologies.

I highly recommend reading the interview with Ray as there are some other really valid points made there about the progression away from pure web applications back to a combination of software and services.

I think the Mark 1 street directory is superior to both.

All your costs are upfront, usually around $10. No access costs.

Bit bulkier to carry but much quicker to use.

Driving directions are not included, however the user can combine it with an invention called a ballpoint pen, and produce driving directions on-the-fly.

What you need to install the HTC Home Customizer from PocketEmu Software. (http://www.pocketemu.com)

From the Info Page

The HTC Home Customizer v1.0 is an application which lets you completely customize and backup/restore your HTC Home Plugin settings.

   * Customize the look of your plugin from 4 different appearance options.

   * Save appearance settings to a custom Theme list.

   * View and download extra appearances directly to your device through the app.

   * Create a custom weather database to select cities from instead of the default list.

   * Change all plugin options including tab ordering.

   * Backup/restore of the HTC Home Plugin (contacts, launcher, weather and settings) and HTC Home Customizer settings.

# re: Microsoft Disappoints (again)

Oh boy do I hear ya! Another thing that annoys me is that you have to use a Windows machine to do the downloads because the downloader is an ActiveX component! As you said, it's just a single use case of downloading a bunch of files so why the platform lock-in?!

My main machine these days is a Mac (yep, I do device dev under a VM and it works a treat) and I have to fire up Parallels or remote desktop into a server to do any downloads.

There's something ironic about MSDN Subscriber Downloads making Virtual PC for Mac available, but you need access to a Windows PC to get it.

Wednesday, November 21, 2007 8:58 PM by nev

# re: Microsoft Disappoints (again)

<gripe>

Oh don't get me even started about the download manager. I don't understand at all why Microsoft require any 'management' of their MSDN downloads server side. Any functionality they receive from using the new Akamai download manager can be provided by other technologies without significantly limiting the client side.

Quite frankly it should just be a matter of selecting and saving the download, a simple paradigm exists for this and why should that change? IMHO the client - not the server - should be responsible for the download management and thats exactly the reason why capable tools such as GetRight, FDM etc were created. We don't need another separate tool that only fulfils half the functionality of the others and breaks too!

Yup - pretty annoying. Tying the IDE XML comment-generation and compiler XML doc file generation into the same setting is a bit WtF!

So, my VB.NET developers are left with two options:

Option A - Harder to produce useful class / method comments.

Option B - Slower compile time.

Neither are very attractive.

In Paul's defence, he has offered to present later in the year, when he has less on his plate.

It is slightly annoying when this happens (especially as Perth gets less 'circuit' presenters compared to the eastern states), but we all have to earn a buck, so I understand when people have to pull out.

Of course, everyone was looking forward to Paul's session on WPF databinding as it seems to be one of a few hot topics atm.

As Nick mentioned, Michael Minutillo graciously agreed to move his session forward a month, as did Davis Shields who will be presenting in March.

# re: User Group Frustrations

Hi Nick, this blog entry has caused quite a stir! :)

From my understanding, there are some things that you mention here that are either incorrect, or, if not wrong, then certainly misleading.

In one sense, it is perfectly reasonable to link Paul with Readify - he's one of our brightest young guys :) - but I think that it is somewhat implicit in your entry that the decision to 'pull' Paul was a Readify one and one which was based on a scheduling issue.  This was not the case.

I'm sure that a conversation with Paul about this would clear things up as to why he was forced to withdraw 3 weeks out.

You well know that we (Readify) have always supported the community when the opporutnity arises - heck, even I've done a Perth UG presentation! :-) (actually, on that, here's a tip for anybody who is planning to travel from the east coast to do a UG talk, remember when you go out for a couple of beers that midnight Perth time is probably more like 3AM for your local body clock :-))

Maybe a source control checkin policy rule/workitem to "remind" the dev that perhaps they should update/change the comments? Still have to be optional though. Or in your coding standards you state that the "feature" number that you are maintaining be put in the code as a comment. Then at least you have some reference to what was maintained and why.

# re: Sex in a Phone

Silky - don't you have anything positive to say. To be honest if you are writing mobile applications in anything other than c++ then you are just creating bloatware (says the 100% managed dev).

But it is interesting when you look at Apple's developer strategy.  They're opinion is that they only want the best developers (ie c++ devs) to write for their platform in the hop that it will create faster, more stable applications for all devices running their OS.  Personally I think they are dillusional and that they are just cutting off their nose to spite their face - they'll just end up with less developers writing for their platform.

Monday, February 11, 2008 8:29 PM by silky

# re: Sex in a Phone

eh? Java is bloatware? What are you talking about? It's "well" supported [as "well" as you can hope in this environment] on a _lot_ of phones, and is perfectly suited for the job. We are using to great success in a huge variety of devices. We only get screwed by the WM devices [so-called "smart" phones] because they don't have a native jre. I haven't seen much of apples strategy but I didn't realise you needed to write c++ to write apps for the iphone/ipod touch. To be honest though I haven't looked at it.
Monday, February 11, 2008 8:39 PM by nick

# re: Sex in a Phone

But can't you just install the JRE with your app (ie deploy both the JRE and your app in a single CAB)?

I was talking about the app you're building rather than the JRE in terms of it being bloatware - I haven't benchmarked them but I would guess that Jave apps on the JRE and .NET CF apps probably run about the same speed, whereas native apps run significantly faster.

Monday, February 11, 2008 8:59 PM by Silky

# re: Sex in a Phone

We can't do that because our app is aiming for wider reach. We haven't really _specifically_ targetted smart phones with our current deployment strategy (OTA), but when we do [and it'll be soon] we'll need to look at either getting a JRE on there [probably not possible for a general user; I know that you actually have to _BUY_ it for a version of a Palm Treo)] or write another app for WM speficially [so .net cf I suppose, or something like that, or maybe something earlier, due to compat requirements]. Bottom line is that it's just a little frustrating that WM doesn't have a native JRE. It would make my life a bit easier :) And agreed, non-native apps will be slower. Sometimes we even get strange music and loading screens when getting into the 'Java' section on some phones [definitely when installing on the samsungs] :)
Monday, February 11, 2008 9:08 PM by nick

# re: Sex in a Phone

The irony of this is that Sun shot Java in the foot when it had that lawsuit that now prevents Microsoft from distributing the JRE.  It's definitely along the same lines of Microsoft not releasing the .NET Framework for different operating systems - which is why there are so many web apps out there, after all few people want to do rich client dev in Java since the UI has sucked until recently but .NET FX has cross platform support issues (discounting, which most large orgs do, Mono etc)

Rob - I'd be interested to know what the issue was too.  I guess I just found it ironic that with all the song and dance that was made about an application which I considered to be a poor demonstration of the full power of WPF, it is one of the first to have issues when running under SP1.

From recollection it was ClickOnce deployed (or is that my imagination - it's been a while since I installed it), in which case I wonder whether users can get the update automatically, or does it fail before that.

# re: Skype Challenge - A Year On

I use skype on my Nokia E65 on the Three network quite often. It's integrated quite well into the Three's network, with a landline gateway for voice calls.

The skype mobile application runs on the E65, and when you want to make or receive a phone call, it redirects you to a landline number to make the call, just like a normal mobile phone call. So instead of a scratchy VoIP connection, you get normal phone call quality. I've called overseas to Malaysia, and get reasonable quality, with about 500ms voice lag.

Three requires you to be on a data plan for the mobile app to communicate with the skype server to see who's online, but you don't get data usage fees for actual phone calls.

And I've also gone a month without a mobile phone, or any form of mobile communication. Liberating, but also quite isolating at the same time. :(

"The installer has encountered an unexpected String installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The String code is 2356."

Need help! Thanks in advance.

# re: Getting MultiPoint SDK Installed under Windows XP SP3

Managed to get past that error noted above.

The key to that is:

After editing in Orca, simply hit enter and then click the save button and exit Orca.

If you (like me) clicked anywhere else in the left bar and then hit save, the saved .msi does not run (and oh! don't know if this matters, but do not rename the file either).

Tuesday, November 25, 2008 3:07 PM by Greg Berlin

# re: Getting MultiPoint SDK Installed under Windows XP SP3

Hi Indie Joe,

It sounds like your MSI has become corrupted during the patching process.  MSDN specified error 2356 to be "Could not locate cabinet in stream", so I'd recommend trying the patch again.  To be safe, download the original MSI installer file again and try to patch that one - its possible the original file you used was already corrupted.

Good luck!

# re: HTC Touch Pro – Breaking the iPhone trend

If you cut my arm, I'd bleed Microsoft blood but this is an area where sadly, they just don't get what's required.

I've had a number of Windows mobile devices and moving to an iPhone was simply a breath of fresh air by comparison. Setup experience for me was:

1. Plug in phone

2. Choose some simple options from iTunes (including this now becoming my iPod replacement)

3. Choose what I wanted to sync

and it's worked ever since.

My installation experience for Windows Mobile has always required some combination of black magic and voodoo to get anything working.

Everything I've found hard about using the iPhone has turned out to be me looking for a harder way to do things because of my Windows-mobile background.

I'm not alone. I heard this time and again while at TechEd Barcelona two weeks ago. Every time I was sitting at a table of Microsoft Regional Directors and a phone would ring, iPhones would appear. You couldn't find a more MS-oriented set of people but they understand the difference.

Apple seem to have also won the mind-share battle again. Every time I see a new mobile Internet service now (ANZ, QANTAS, etc, etc.), it mentions iPhone support specifically.

When has that ever been the case for Windows Mobile, even given how long it's been available?

And this is the only time in the last upteen years when I've been seriously looking at buying a Mac so I can do native iPhone development.

Displays multiple project breakages and build progress. Its’ easy to read from 40 meters.

# re: Extending the Widget model on Windows Mobile 6.5

I'm interested in this extensibility story too.

I'm not expecting the market place to allow widgets that deploy CABs from external servers.

If they did it would seem to rather weaken their response as to why widgets must be deployed via the marketplace (security etc), as any bad bits could be pushed into the "uncontrollable" CAB file.

I'm wondering if another scenario would be to package up your widget as a *.CAB instead of a *.widget file. If you deployed this from your own server it could install the ActiveX control and a custom setup.dll could directly launch wmwidgetinstaller.exe to install the embedded widget file).

You would probbably loose the ability to publish via the market place, as again I assume they won't accept such a CAB for publication. But it may be a scenario for line of business / inhouse developments.

I've started porting Chris Craft's 30 days of windows mobile apps to widget form (windowsmobileapps.codeplex.com) but am quickly getting to the ones which will require access to GPS / phone functionality.

I am new here and would like to get some ideas on how to build websites and what items to market.  Ihave been dabbling wiht web design, but I am very new to the whole scheme of things.  I recently built a simple website that has tons of great information, but I need to know how to improve upon it.

You can see it here: <a href=acai">http://www.ibuyacaiberry.com>acai supplement</a>

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Sometimes it's really that simple, isn't it? I feel a little stupid for not thinking of this myself/earlier, though.

# re: Windows Mobile Happenings

Nick, Seems like there's a lot going on in the Mobile Market. I've been quite disconnected since I got to Australia. I'll have to check the Mobile Market and see if I come up with something cool. Too bad I missed the SDNUG talk. Do you think there's something to say about Windows Mobile at a Silverlight Meeting? We could probably arrange something for Octobers meeting?

# re: Windows Phone 7 Series Development – What Do You Want?

I'm fairly confident the reasons for WM failing to attract users and developer are many fold. Off the top I can think of:

Users:

- Poor experiences with badly designed and built apps meant any that did try it weren't motivated to come back.

- Issues with apps not playing nicely with their desktop equivalents.

- Desktop apps not running on their phones - "It's all just Windows" mentality.

- Platform/applications/functionality not promoted to users so didn't know what missing or what to ask for.

- Users didn't know where to go to get apps? (or even that they were available?)

- Often poor installation experience of apps when people did get them.

Developers:

- The vast array of different hardware (Including buttons, keyboards, screens) making it hard(er) to write an app which will run on all devices.

- Developers were told that developing for mobile was the same as developing for desktop it isn't!  When they found out it was different they were put off.

- Home developers were prevented from building apps by the requirement of Visual Studio Professional edition.  Much too expensive for someone who is just a hobbiest.

- Lack of a high profile market place for apps.

- A focus on business users by MSFT meant that personal users were often overlooked by developers as well.

and lots more...
